Ethernet Ring Protection Switching(ERPS) is a ring network protection protocol mainly used in Ethernet ringnetworks to prevent broadcast storms caused by data loops and quickly restorecommunication when the link is disconnected. Here are some details about ERPSfiber optic ring network switches

  1. The basic concept of ERPS

ERPS works based on the link layer, whichdefines key concepts such as RPL (Ring Protection Link), R-APS VLAN, and dataVLAN. In an ERP network, each node belongs to a specific Ethernet ring, andeach Ethernet ring has an RPL owner node that is responsible for opening theRPL link in the event of a link failure to restore network communication. Inaddition, ERP also supports multi-ring intersection and tangency, which greatlyincreases the flexibility of networking.

  2. How ERP works

ERPS prevents network loops by blocking RPLlinks. When a link fails, the nodes adjacent to the faulty link report thefault and block the faulty link, and then all nodes update their MAC addressentries and ARP/ND entries to enter the protection state. When the link isrestored, the RPL Owner node starts the recovery process after receiving theR-APS (NR) message, and finally restores the normal state of the network

  3. Technical characteristics of ERPS

ERP has the characteristics of load balancing, good security, and support for multi-ring intersection and tangency. Byconfiguring multiple Ethernet rings on the same physical ring network, thetopology of data traffic in different VLANs can be realized in the ringnetwork, so as to achieve the purpose of load balancing. In addition, ERP onlyprocesses protocol packets from R-APS VLANs and does not process any protocolattack packets from data VLANs, thus improving security. At the same time, ERPsupports adding multiple rings in the form of tangent or intersection at thesame node, which greatly increases the flexibility of networking.

  4. Application scenarios of ERPS

ERPS fiber ring switches are widely used inindustrial environments that require high stability and fast recoverycapabilities, such as factory automation, intelligent transportation, and videosurveillance. Its self-healing time is usually less than 20ms, ensuring highstability of front-end video data transmission.
